It’s summer time and that means relaxation, fun, and indulgence! With so much of this summer time fun we often ignore our dental health. The summer heat compels us to drink cold beverages, and eat ice creams, both of which are detrimental to our dental health.
The following dental tips will help you care for your dental health, without refraining from your favorite summer indulgences.
1. Stay Hydrated
Summer deprives our body of water, making us feel dehydrated time and again. You must stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water, and other fluids, such as, coconut water, and fresh juices. However, avoid aerated and other sugar laden drinks as they harm your teeth. Staying hydrated keeps tooth decay at bay, and also protects your gum tissues, and skin.
2. Don’t let your mouth get dry
Dehydration, or dry mouth can cause plague accumulation, tooth decay, and halitosis / bad breath. These can lead to dental cavities and gum diseases. Thus, to avoid the same, you must keep sipping water to not let your mouth go dry.
3. Brush twice a day and floss every night
Summer and sweet tooth go hand-in-hand, but high volumes of sugars can cause cavities and commence the process of tooth decay. Avoiding ice creams and cold drinks in summer seems next to impossible, and thus, you must follow a strict oral care routine. Make sure that you brush your teeth right after swimming, to avoid erosion and weakening of the teeth, due to high levels of chlorine in the pools. Brushing twice a day, for two minutes, will help keep the dental problems at bay.
4. Use mouth guards to prevent dental emergencies
Summer calls for a lot of sports activities, which may lead to sudden accidents. Though, we cannot stop the accidents, we can definitely prevent the damage. Whether it’s you or your kid, wearing a mouth guard during your sports activities can protect your teeth. Wearing a mouth guard ensures that your teeth do not crack, chip or damage your lips, cheeks and gums in the event of an accident.
5. Snack healthy
With the kids being home all the day, they would probably want to snack more often. Undoubtedly, the best summer snack is a fresh fruit. Apart from this you can stock your kitchen with protein rich food, along with nuts and cheese. Keeping these instead of the unhealthier options will force your kids to snack healthy throughout the summer.
6. Go for a dental check up or cleaning
Summer is a perfect time for dental checkups. Getting your / your kid’s teeth cleaned, and oral health checked at the start of summer ensures that you / your kid have no dental problems all through summer. After all, the last thing you would want is waste the perfect summer holidays for you / your kid due to dental problems.
Now that you’re summer ready, go make the most of it and have FUN!
